On Community Day, not-for-profit Powerhouse Arts (PHA) welcomes its community to its iconic facility, the Herzog & de Meuron revitalized Batcave in Gowanus, to enjoy a day of discovery which will include activations from the PHA Print, Ceramics, and Public Art shops, as well as partner organizations, artists, and educators who share a commitment to creative expression. Attendees of all ages will be able to engage and take part in a wide range of creative activities such as zine designing, printmaking, and ceramics.

Highlights include:

Artwork and presence on site from the beloved ESPO’s Art World fabrication team. Attendees may bring a garment to be screen printed with an ESPO logotype (free of charge).

In the Grand Hall, workshops and demonstrations will be presented by the Textile Arts Center, Makeville Studio, UrbanGlass, The Alpha Workshops, NYC Resistor and Crafitspring.

Throughout the day, special performances will take place in the organization’s light-filled Loft from Brooklyn Music Factory, Girl Be Heard, Dancewave, and Artichoke Dance, as well as outdoor art activations created by Mookntaka and Street Lab. There will also be film showings in the Small Hall from Story Font Studio and GOWANUS CURRENT.

Artwork from Brooklyn College’s MFA Thesis Show will be on display in the Lobby.

Guests will have the opportunity to explore the PHA state-of-the-art fabrication offerings:

Printshop: Attendees can learn to screenprint, with the option to bring home 1 of 4 limited editions prints, designed by Master Printer Chris Kinsler.

Ceramics: Attendees can collaboratively decorate a large amphora, designed by Ceramics Fabricator Jeffrey Close in addition to learning handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques.

Public Art: Attendees can learn how a CNC machine works and bring home a CNC-created token designed by Fabricator Daniel Quinn and Master Printer Dennis Hrehowsik.
